Buddha's Fragrance、A Global History: From Prehistory to the 21st Century
French
After “MOI 01,” Zhong Ying realized that that project only captured one day of her life and could not constitute a complete personal history. That is why she chose photography as a medium to document and transmit her life experiences, believing it effectively captures each significant moment and serves as a historical testimony.
As part of this project, Zhong Ying employs a unique technique: she burns pages of books with incense to transfer her photographs onto the English edition of A Global History: From Prehistory to the 21st Century. This approach is not intended to completely destroy the official history but rather to preserve its traces through the process of combustion, allowing viewers to simultaneously discover her personal history alongside the authoritative narrative of the world.
This is an ongoing project in which each photograph taken will be incorporated into A Global History: From Prehistory to the 21st Century until the entire official history is eventually covered.

"MOI 01" is Zhong Ying's first work devoted to recording her personal history. Created with Zhong Ying herself as the experimental subject, this piece is based on the journal she wrote on November 9, 2019, which serves as historical material. For Zhong Ying, the personal diary is an effective means of documenting one's history, and she wishes to immortalize this testimony through the project.
Using transparent adhesive tape as a tool, Zhong Ying extracts the corresponding text from the Chinese version of A Global History: From Prehistory to the 21st Century and reassembles her journal onto the tape. This process simultaneously constructs her personal history while symbolically dismantling the authoritative narrative. In this way, Zhong Ying aims to illustrate the necessity for the individual to reclaim narrative control over history and to emphasize the importance of the individual in the process of rewriting historical memory.
